JESS MCGEACHIN

Jess McGeachin is an author and illustrator living in Narrm (Melbourne, Australia).

His debut picture book, Fly, was published in 2019 and was shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia and Queensland Literary Awards. His first two non-fiction books, Deep and Kind, were published in 2022. Deep was the winner of the 2023 CBCA Eve Pownall Award. Kind and The Tree at Number 43 were the co-winners of the 2023 Environment Awards for Children’s Literature, and South with the Seabirds is a CBCA Honour Book.

Jess draws quite literally from a day job at Melbourne Museum, where he’s lucky enough to help design exhibitions and occasionally get lost in the basement.

TALKS

Write your own adventure!

Years 3-6

Writing stories can take you to all sorts of places, from the middle of the jungle to an island near Antarctica. Jess McGeachin will share where he gets ideas, the ways that books can take you on adventures, and what it’s like to meet penguins in real life (very noisy!).

WORKSHOPS

Amazing animal characters – Character design with Jess McGeachin

Years 2-4

In this session we’ll look to nature for inspiration when designing our own characters.
Will your character have the teeth of a fierce shark or camouflage like a chameleon?
We’ll practice nature sketching, think about what makes a good character and see what happens when they meet one another.

X marks the spot – Creative map-making with Jess McGeachin

Years 4-7

Have you ever wanted to find an old, dusty map that leads to a hidden world? Or directions to a secret hoard of buried treasure? In this workshop participants will learn about different types of maps from the real (and not so real) world, learn how maps can be a useful tool in storytelling and design their very own secret fantasy map.
