Katrina Nannestad’s ‘Waiting for the storks’ shortlisted at the 2023 YABBA Awards…

On the 17th of May, the 2023 YABBA Awards shortlisted Australian books were announced with Katrina Nannestad’s ‘Waiting for the storks’ being shortlisted in the Fiction for Years 7-9 category…

‘Waiting for the storks‘ is set during WWII and Himmler’s Lebensborn Program is in full flight when eight-year-old Zofia Ulinski is kidnapped by the Germans. She has blonde hair and blue eyes, just like the other Polish children taken from their families and robbed of their names, their language, their heritage. But when Zofia is adopted into a wealthy and loving German family, it is easier, it is safer to bury her past, deep down, so everything is forgotten. Until the Polish boy arrives. And the past comes back to haunt her.

The Young Australians Best Book Awards (YABBA) is an organisation that aims to provide children a voice within the general Australian children’s book industry.  YABBA encourages children to recommend recent Australian published books, read all the recommendations for their peers, rate them against all others and then finally reward that book they feel is best.

Voting by Victorian school students closes on the 15th of September with the winners being announced on the 19th of October.
