KATRINA NANNESTAD

Katrina Nannestad is a multi-award-winning children’s author whose writing encompasses history, mystery, adventure and humour.

Her historical novels include All the Beautiful Things, Silver Linings, Waiting for the Storks, the CBCA Honour Book Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief, We Are Wolves and The Girl Who Brought Mischief. Her series include The Travelling Bookshop, The Girl, the Dog and the Writer, Olive of Groves, Red Dirt Diaries and Lottie Perkins.

Katrina grew up in country New South Wales in a neighbourhood stuffed full of happy, slightly wild children. Her adult years have been spent raising boys, teaching, daydreaming and pursuing her love of stories. Katrina celebrates family, friendship and belonging in her writing and loves creating stories that bring joy or hope to other people’s lives.

Stories, Stories Everywhere

Years R-2

A fun and interactive session focusing on where we can get great ideas for our stories. There will be readings, dress-ups, drawing, daydreaming and giggling involved.

Bringing History Alive

Years 5-8

Many of Katrina’s historical novels focus on lesser-known aspects of the Second World War.
During this interactive session, Katrina will talk about the true stories that inspired her war stories, and the exciting but sometimes tricky process of researching and writing. Students will participate in activities designed to bring the stories alive.

Having Fun with Stories

Years 3-6

A fun, fast-paced session during which Katrina will share her journey as an author, her passion for writing and some easy-to-use techniques that will help students develop their own fascinating characters and story ideas. There will be readings, dress-ups and giggling involved.

WORKSHOPS

Developing and Revealing Character

Years 5-8

Participants will be taken through a number of short, fun activities to create an exciting new character. The strategies used in this workshop are also useful for planning and writing a complete story.

Having Fun with Writing

Years 3-6

Katrina will take participants through a series of fun, fast-paced, risk-free writing activities to get the imagination whirring and to generate fabulous story ideas. The activities in this workshop are some of those Katrina uses in her own writing practice, and a taste of those included in her new book, The Story Writer’s Handbook.
